Historically, mercury has been used in oilfield operations in switches, separation, and other applications. Elemental mercury is found in many older gathering and transportation systems. There is also some naturally occurring mercury found during drilling and production. When encountered, due to the toxicity of mercury as well as its regulatory status, mercury must be cleaned up by certified personnel working in appropriate Personal Protective Equipment and properly disposed or recycled. Souder, Miller & Associates (SMA) personnel are trained, equipped, and experienced in mercury investigation, clean-up, and disposal in the oilfield.

Asbestos materials were employed in oil and gas operations and equipment as insulation and sealant in high temperature applications. Such materials pose health hazards to operations personnel as well as significant liability for the operating companies. SMA provides professional evaluation and assessment as well as oversight of clean-up and disposal operations to mitigate the hazards of asbestos-containing materials in the oilfield.

SMA’s Oil and Gas services include assessment of a variety of spill and leakage incidents as well as design and implementation of a broad range of clean-up strategies, starting with liaison with the appropriate regulatory agencies and surface owners through oversight of clean-up contractors or remediation systems finishing with proper transport and disposal and documentation.

SMA provides creative professional evaluations and solutions to a wide array of special and unique challenges encountered in Oil and Gas exploration, production, processing, and transport activities. Examples include non-exempt waste characterization and disposal; coal bed methane formation monitoring wells; evaluation and mitigation of an extremely low pH artesian cathodic protection well; preparation of Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures Plans (SPCC), and addressing Storm Water Pollution Prevention issues for production and processing facilities.

As part of SMA’s involvement in the Oil and Gas Industry, SMA has met the requirements promulgated by ISNetWorld and participates in both DISA and NCMS systems for drug and alcohol program compliance. SMA’s health and safety programs have met and exceed industry standard for our services; SMA maintains an active and on-going training program for employees and requires that our subcontractors meet the same standards. SMA’s insurance and record-keeping programs meet and exceed Oil and Gas Industry standards and are under constant review.
