Project Civil Engineer (Multiple Locations)

Souder, Miller & Associates has immediate openings for Project Civil Engineers. Primary responsibilities will include working on site, civil, municipal, and environmental engineering projects (water, wastewater, roads, etc.). The position requires a B.S. and/or M.S. degree in civil engineering and at least 5 years of experience. P.E. registration preferred; E.I.T. accepted with the ability to obtain P.E. within one year. Position requires project management, client contact, civil engineering design and analysis, construction inspection, computer modeling, data gathering, supervision of CADD drafters, and overnight local travel.

Engineer-in-Training— Albuquerque, New Mexico

Immediate opening for an Engineer-in-Training at Souder, Miller & Associates' Albuquerque office. The EIT will assist project and senior engineers with civil engineering projects (predominantly water and wastewater) by assisting in client contact and communication; and developing construction cost estimates, analysis of reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, and tests. Responsibilities also include preparing design computations and quantity estimates; assisting in the preparation or modification of reports, specifications, design plans, contract documents, submittal review, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, permits and designs; instructions to draftspersons/technicians; and construction inspections. Use of computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents will be required, and performing occasional drafting, if qualified. The EIT will also be responsible for job-specific quality system tasks. This position will prepare employee for P.E. registration. Qualification requirements include a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited four-year college or university and a state F.E. or E.I.T.

Staff Engineer II or Project Engineer I—Las Cruces, New Mexico

SUMMARY: Self-motivated member of an engineering team, able to establish and maintain good client relationships. Plans and designs civil engineering projects from inception to completion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Prepares and monitors project budgets. Has overall responsibility for the profitability of projects.
  • Responsible for project schedules and timely completion of projects.
  • Serves as a project manager and/or engineer, funding agency contact, and as a client contact.
  • Develops pricing and estimating for proposed projects.
  • Prepares forecast of workload for support staff with respect to assigned projects.
  • Develops probable construction cost estimates for projects.
  • Attends client meetings as needed - days, nights, weekends, etc.
  • Responsible for review of work-in-process, ensures accurate client billings, and monitors outstanding accounts receivable and collection efforts on assigned projects.
  • Prepares reports, contract documents, technical specifications, construction plans, construction schedules, and designs for project.
  • Coordinates with draftspersons, technicians, and environmental staff for other support activities on assigned projects.
  • Visits construction site to monitor progress, attends pay request meetings, and other duties per the contract documents.
  • Uses computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.
  • Performs design calculations and maintains design files, and identifies and develops appropriate details for projects.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's or advanced degree in engineering from an accredited four-year college or university and a minimum of 5 years experience as a civil engineer. Applicant must have the last 3 years of work experience in water and wastewater system analysis and design. Additional background in storm drainage analysis and design, site development, subdivision, and roadway design is preferable.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must be a registered P.E. in New Mexico or a registered E.I.T. with the ability to achieve P.E. status in New Mexico within one year, must have a valid drivers license with insurable driving record.

This is an exciting opportunity for a licensed Surveyor to join our Grand Junction, Colorado team. Specific requirements include proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Microstation. Senior Project Engineer—Farmington, New Mexico

SUMMARY: Self-starter, able to establish good rapport with clients, work well in team environment, willing to take projects from inception to completion. Plans, designs, and directs civil engineering projects by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Prepares and monitors project budgets. Has overall responsibility for the profitability of projects.
  • Responsible for project schedules and timely completion of projects.
  • Serves as a senior project manager or senior project engineer on complex projects and as a designated client contact.
  • Supervises and monitors client relationship strategies. Is the primary client contact.
  • Coordinates and approves pricing, estimating, scoping and marketing strategies for proposed projects.
  • Develops engineering agreements for projects within the department.
  • Prepares forecast of workload for assigned staff.
  • Develops probable construction cost estimates for projects within the department.
  • Attends client meetings – days, nights, weekends, etc.
  • Responsible for control of work-in-process, ensures accurate client billings, and monitors outstanding accounts receivable and collection efforts on projects.
  • Analyzes reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, tests, and aerial photographs on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and other topographical and geologic data to plan and design project.
  • Directs and supervises other engineer's activities.
  • Handles contract administration.
  • Prepares or directs preparation and modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, and designs for project.
  • Directs draftspersons/technicians to convert designs to working drawings.
  • Visits construction site to monitor progress and other duties per the contract documents.
  • Uses computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.
  • Performs design calculations and maintains design files, prepares plans and specifications, develops details, assists junior engineers and CAD designers in the development of plans and specifications.
  • Manages significant marketing responsibilities with clients to obtain work for the firm.
  • Responsible for project manager and/or project team quality system tasks as defined in the quality manual.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree, master's degree or doctorate in engineering from an accredited four-year college or university and a minimum of 5 to 10 years experience as civil engineer. Must be registered P.E. in New Mexico. Must have the last 3 years of work experience in site development, subdivision, roadway design, water and wastewater system analysis and design, storm drainage analysis and design, etc.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Colorado. Valid drivers license.

Construction Inspector—Northern New Mexico

Souder, Miller & Associates has an opening for a Construction Inspector, based in its Albuquerque and Santa Fe offices. Selected individual will work on projects throughout northern New Mexico.

Candidate must have a minimum of five years of experience in the construction industry, two years of which, ideally, shall be for water and wastewater projects.

Responsibilities include administering and monitoring the construction phase for design/bid/build and design-build projects. Coordinate with owner, project designers and contractors to ensure that procedures/specifications are followed. Ensure that contractors are in compliance with project plans and specifications. Monitor progression and quality of work done by contractors and quality of materials used on-site. Evaluate progress of project to determine if time schedules are being met. Ensure project time and cost objectives are met. Prepare and assist with project closeout documents.

This position requires thorough knowledge of construction engineering methods, practices and procedures, the ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications, the ability to identify difficult construction issues and develop and solutions that represent the best interests of and minimizes risk to SMA and the client. Candidates should have the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, must be self-motivated and able to prepare documents and reports utilizing Word and Excel computer software. Ability to represent SMA's interests in a professional and conscientious manner, excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to follow all policies, procedures, and guidelines (including, but not limited to, safety, civility, and nondiscrimination) are required The ability to maintain a safe work environment in accordance with OSHA and company requirements is a must.

Some overnight local travel, a New Mexico driver's license, and a good (insurable) driving record are required.

Electrical Engineer—Albuquerque & Santa Fe

Responsibilities
As a fully competent Registered Professional Engineer in the State of New Mexico, performs work involving the application of electrical engineering power, process controls, and SCADA for water, wastewater and other projects. Exercises judgment in the independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Conceptualizes the initial electrical design approach for all phases of facilities type projects, or has overall responsibility for the electrical engineering work on a project of limited scope. Plans, schedules, conducts and/or coordinates all electrical engineering design work required for a project. Also performs inspections during construction and is responsible for preparation of Record Drawings. Resolves a variety of complex problems (i.e., conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, difficult coordination requirements). Serves as a liaison between clients and agencies, subcontractors, and design teams. Reviews plans and prepares or reviews technical specifications, contract documents, and estimates. Participates in contract bidding and administration; observes project action on site. May supervise the work of less experienced engineers and/or technical support personnel assigned to the project (not an on-going substantial job component).

Education
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of New Mexico or the ability to obtain licensure within three months of hire.

Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive work experience in the electrical engineering field as pertaining to facility power, process, and SCADA.
