SMA gets FAA 333 Exemption to operate a UAV commercially

March 11th, 2016

Souder, Miller & Associates (SMA) has been granted an exemption by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) commercially.

“We now offer our clients access to technology to supplement how we provide surveying, engineering and environmental services. UAV technology allows SMA to cost effectively capture site conditions through aerial photography for the purposes of aerial mapping, volume assessments, and vegetation monitoring. In addition, this technology allows SMA staff to evaluate sites from a distance that may otherwise be hazardous to visit in person.” says Bill Brewster, V.P. Survey Business Line Manager.

SMA is a 200-person consulting firm with offices throughout the Southwest, including Farmington, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Roswell, Carlsbad and Hobbs in New Mexico; Lakewood, Rifle, Grand Junction and Cortez in Colorado; Safford, Arizona; Moab, Utah; and El Paso, Texas.
