7th Street and Sligo Street Roadways and Bridge

The City of Cortez, Colorado, selected Souder, Miller & Associates (SMA) to complete the design, prepare construction documents, and provide construction support services for a thoroughfare. This street now pro-vides a traffic connection between the community’s southern residential neighborhoods and commercial areas along East Main Street. The City extended 7th Street eastward from its present terminus near the Southern Bluffs Subdivision to an intersection with the Sligo Street alignment. Sligo Street was extended northward to its current point of termination west of the Wal-Mart Supercenter, approximately two blocks south of Main Street (U.S. Highway 160).

In addition to its work on the roadway itself, on a portion of 7th Street SMA designed a 48-foot long ConSpan structure to cross a wetlands area, the longest ConSpan structure available at the time of design. When the Redirock retaining wall was constructed around the ConSpan structure, it was the largest Redirock structure in the United States.

SMA provided the following services: data collection, topographic survey, preliminary drainage analysis, pre-liminary design package, engineering cost estimate, review with the City, attendance at public hearings, kickoff meeting, review meeting, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWP3), design, construction bid document development, bidding-phase support, and construction-phase support. SMA provided oversight for the geo-technical investigation (performed by Terracon Consulting Engineers & Scientists) and the environmental clearances and permit application (performed by Sugnet Environmental, Inc.).

With its large, experienced staff, SMA was able to finish the project ahead of schedule. The City of Cortez is very pleased with SMA’s performance.
