To’hajiilee’s Water Well Outage Emergency Repair: Team Effort

July 11th, 2019

The To’hajiilee Navajo Chapter, a community of about 1,800 people just west of Albuquerque, faced a water emergency when their only operational water well failed last Friday (7/5). A client of SMA, the Chapter reached out during the weekend to George Mihalik, P.E., who was able to obtain four large water trucks from the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Authority (ABCWUA) to help supply the community with clean water for the remainder of the emergency.  The State of New Mexico was also able to lend a hand by sending two semitrucks of bottled water from the Los Lunas Walmart to the Chapter while the well was being fixed.

It was determined the pump’s motor had failed and as of Tuesday (7/9), the well is back online and distributing clean water to the residents of the To’hajiilee Navajo Chapter. The collaborative effort between SMA, ABCWUA, and the State of New Mexico minimized the crisis and swiftly enacted a solution.

Special thanks to George Mihalik, P.E., the Chapter’s client manager, for taking charge to help a local community and coordinate with local and state government to restore To’hajiilee’s water supply.
