HELPING DOTs PROVIDE PROVIDE SAFE, MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE

SMA has completed many substantial highway and multi-modal projects in rural, suburban, and urban settings. We support the engineering, environmental and surveying aspects of highway planning and design, traffic operation analysis, intersection and signalization design, intelligent transportation design, mixed-use trail design and related construction support services.

EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT MOUNTAIN WEST

Our extensive project delivery includes corridor & alignment studies, traffic studies, road safety audits, design analysis reports, preliminary design, final design and construction management of highway and traffic facilities. SMA is presently approved for work for the Departments of Transportation in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.

Our goal is to meet or exceed client expectations and deliver projects on time and within budget.

Expertise

Our professional staff has comprehensive expertise in highway design, traffic operational analysis, traffic design, drainage analysis and design, minor structural design, environmental assessments and project coordination, including initial funding, final design and construction observation.

Multidisciplinary

Using a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving, we provide creative and comprehensive solutions to challenging projects. Having an integrated team of licensed professionals- engineers, geologists and surveyor- allows for seamless distribution of project elements between teams and improving design continuity.

Relationships

Developing close working relationships and encouraging client participation allows our experts to focus on developing and executing projects that result in practical solutions to complex engineering problems. Many staff members have practical work experience at a local, state or federal DOT allowing a common perspective on resolving problems prior to construction.

Building the Future Together

SMA has been called upon to provide design and construction solutions for projects of all sizes:

Small projects requiring quick response, cost-effective design and construction plans

Large projects involving thorough evaluation of all design options, traffic / pedestrian safety, mobility for multiple modes of transportation sensitivity for cultural resources, biological conditions and public involvement

Past Experience

Recent design experience includes rural highways through difficult mountainous terrain, major urban arterial and collector streets and major traffic controlled signalized intersections of state highways.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) On-call, NMDOT

SMA was, and currently still is, the on-call consultant for ITS assignments through the Department’s Traffic Management Center (TMC). Through the ITS on-call, we have developed ITS standard drawings, prepared specifications, developed fiber optic splicing plans, prepared system expansion plans, and managed the construction of ITS projects. We have also developed the designs for dynamic message signs (DMS), traffic surveillance cameras, and automated vehicle count installations. Additionally, we prepared the DMS operations manual now used at the TMC and throughout all six district offices to define the appropriate use of DMA in normal day-to-day operations, and "emergency" conditions.

Bringing Pedestrian Access to ADA Compliance

The first 0.4 miles of this project was a five-lane urban roadway with sidewalks, curb and gutter. The highway transitioned to a rural roadway with center left-turn lanes and then to two twelve-foot driving lanes. The existing roadway was showing signs of subgrade failure and pedestrian facilities were not ADA-compliant. Existing storm drains were undersized.

The new design extended the five-lane urban roadway section north approximately 0.7 miles. The design included reconstruction of the existing pavement in the urban section and pavement rehabilitation for the northern 3.6 miles of rural highway. A new traffic signal, a new storm drain, sidewalk and ADA ramps were constructed though the first mile. Bicycle lanes were included.

Let's Work Together
